DescriptionAll EVs require (by law) a means of producing heat for the purpose of demisting the windscreen. Historically this has been achieved by installing a ~1500W electric heating element in place of the coolant radiator inside your dash. Unfortunately this requires pulling the dash apart for installation, as well as consuming 1.5kW of power while running which can significantly effect range.
Heat pumps as used by vehicle air conditioning systems can be several times more energy-efficient than an electric element (since they are moving heat instead of producing it). We have recently been investigating the modification of existing vehicle air-conditioning to allow reverse cycle A/C - that is, operating as either a cooler or heater.
The crux of the modification is the addition of this valve which can reverse the flow of the refrigerant gas.
These units come standard with a 12VDC solenoid coil.
Please note that installation is not trivial, and air conditioning systems include pressurised, often hazardous gasses so should only be worked on by qualified persons! For WA residents, we are able to arrange complete installations at our workshop - please contact us for more information.
